Glow Worms in Central Auckland! Where?

Did you know there are Glow Worms in central Auckland?

You don't need to go all the way to Waitomo Caves to see glow worms.

I will let you know the exact location further in this blog.

First of all...

What are Glow Worms?

Glow worms are larvae that literally glow in the dark.

Their scientific name translates to 'bright spider-worm'.

This species can be found in Australia and New Zealand.

I have childhood memories of going to Waitomo Caves and starring at the glow worms covering the ceiling of the caves.

They always excited me glowing like stars.

Until now I thought Waitomo Caves was the closest place to Auckland to see glow worms (2 hours 30 minutes drive from Auckland).

However, my friend recently saw them in our local bush!!

Where?!!!

Directions:

  1. Go when its Dark! (between December to March)

  2. Drive / Walk to Glade Place, Birkenhead.

  3. Walk to the bottom of Glade Place

  4. Walk to the Right, through the entrance to Le Roy's Bush where you brush/clean your shoes (see photo below).

  5. About 10m down the steps. Stop!

  6. The Glow Worms are along the right side of the bank for about 20 metres

I'm sorry I don't have a photo of the glow worms!

I tried to take a photo but because it was night time nothing showed on my camera!

It is exciting to see glow worms in the central city!

I hope you see glow worms!

TIP: Glow worms are visible during the warmer months December - March
